Sheela na Gig

A Wall mounted piece, suitable for interior or exterior walls or doorways.

Sheela na Gig are ancient sculptures found extensively all over Ireland. They were often discovered above doorways in churches - however they predate Christianity in Ireland.

Nobody knows the meaning behind them but there are so many interesting theories, ranging from fertility or childbirth symbols to gateways to the afterlife.

I was very happy to receive this commission. The Sheela fits right into the ancient totem-like figures that influence my work.
